Foreign citizens and companies can acquire real property in Australia but notification to or pre-approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) is compulsory for the acquisition of particular types of real property. rural land, accommodation facilities, and urban land corporations/trusts (that is, the trust or corporation holds more than 50 percent of its assets in urban land whether vacant or developed). There are strict controls on the acquisition of vacant land and residential property.
